In memoriam of the 5-year anniversary of the passing of Adam "MCA" Yauch, we wanted to to memorialize the outstanding career of the Beastie Boys. A seminal piece in hip-hop's growth into the mainstream, the group initially started out as a punk group before officially changing styles — and quickly became the most transcendent rap group of all time. You can hear their masterful blend of their punk roots with their love of hip-hop in every song released; they were aggressive, they were fun, they were pure energy — and they truly embodied the emotions of Brooklyn at the time. The Beastie Boys made over a decade of great music, which was simply never seen before from many of their '80s rap counterparts. In an era where hip-hop was considered a fad, the Beastie Boys created a style of music many have tried to emulate, but none have fully captured.
